In the afternoon of June 2, 2023, Academician Ling Wen, a Chair Professor of Shanghai Jiaotong University, an expert in system engineering and energy engineering management, and an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, was invited to the second phase of Juanhu Lake International Academician Lecture Hall. Academician Ling Wen, with the theme of "Admiring the Celestial Expanse, Grounded in Graceful Stride", shared his life experiences of continuous cross-border breakthroughs and stories of transcending inherent thinking patterns. Academician Lee Der-Horng, Dean of ZJUI, presided over the event.

Academician Ling Wen shared his rich life experiences with students, including his diligent academic career and his challenging cross-border career experiences.

Based on the Profession, Solving Difficult Problems

During his academic studies, Academician Ling Wen delved into the application of multivariate statistical analysis methods in comprehensive evaluation of economic benefits, conducted in-depth research on seismic exploration and oil detection in Daqing Oilfield, and devoted himself to the field of intelligent manufacturing, using system engineering thinking to solve engineering problems. Academician Ling Wen said, "We must not only do a solid job in our profession, but also have cross-border skills".

Pioneering and innovating to Cross Boundaries

Although Academician Ling Wen has an engineering background, his pioneering spirit of daring to take the lead and his cross-border spirit of daring to challenge have permeated his entire experience. When he worked in the bank, he designed the first credit risk management system with the expertise of intelligent manufacturing in China; His experience as CFO and CEO of Shenhua Group has given him knowledge in finance and the coal mining industry. When he was the Vice Governor of Shandong Province, he applied various professional knowledge to enhance the management and development of science and technology, transportation, and other fields in Shandong Province, achieving cross-border breakthroughs in politics, industry, education, research, and finance.

During the activity, Academician Ling Wen explained his understanding of the relationship between profession, science, technology, and engineering in simple terms. He pointed out that profession is the means of expression of science and technology, science is the theoretical basis of technological development, technology is the means of scientific progress, and engineering is a bridge from science and technology to the transformation of the world. The holistic and systematic engineering of cross-disciplinary fields will become a trend.

During the on-site discussion, Academician Ling Wen had in-depth interaction with the audience on career planning, cross-disciplinary decision-making thinking, social "involution" and other aspects, and gave patient and meticulous answers to students' confusions and questions.

Academician Ling Wen's cross-border experience and multi-field practice show his endless pursuit of knowledge and his courage for self-breakthrough. He examines problems with the eyes of scientists, drives innovation with the wisdom of managers, and shows emotion and beauty with the inspiration and creativity of artists. With his outstanding talent and broad vision, he has successfully crossed the boundaries of disciplines, fields, and culture, and set a positive example for students to pursue excellence.

His cross-border life not only shows the power of knowledge integration and innovation, but also conveys an important message to us: in today's era of uncertainty and diversity, cross-border thinking and cross-disciplinary cooperation have become the key to promoting human progress. Academician Ling tells us from his own experience that only by having the courage to cross the boundaries of disciplines and embracing diversity can we find the path of innovation in the complex reality and make a real contribution.

This lecture not only broadens the horizons of students in Zhejiang University, deepens their understanding of focus and cross-border development, and encourages their diversified development, but also solidifies intellectual support for the construction of International Collaborative Education Model and strengthens the construction of think tanks.
